- c.1250, from O.Fr. saphir, from L. sapphirus, from Gk. sappheiros "blue stone" (apparently not the gem that now has the name, perhaps lapis lazuli), from a Semitic source (cf. Heb. sappir "sapphire") or from Skt. sanipriya, a dark precious stone, lit. "sacred to Saturn," from Sani "Saturn" + priya "precious."
